Moving into Contracting

There are lots of things to weigh up when moving from the permanent workforce into contracting. Some of the upsides are more obvious; higher daily rates, different taxation methods via Ltd Company etc. But there are other factors to take into consideration – flexibility between contracts can be great if deliberate, but the uncertainty, cost and time off when not engaged on a project can be risky. Also, factoring in holidays, days off without sick pay etc, seasonal fluctuations in the contracting market are all things to consider. There is also the different legal aspect of contracting and as such we would therefore always recommend speaking to a legal representative to understand the various clauses that might affect you, namely IR35 and AWR, and the best option for you to move into contracting. There’s no doubting the strength of the contract market, but we’d prefer you to enter it with your eyes wide open and fully informed!
